Tempered Radicals - The Book

Main content start

Welcome to Tempered Radicals.

Do you care about diversity?  Gender?  Race?  Ethnicity?  Sexual orientation?

Are you an organizational leader, manager, or a new employee trying to figure out how to be yourself at work?

Or a professor, writer, principal, teacher, or student wanting to make a difference in these areas?

In 1995, with my colleague Maureen Scully, I first published an article using the phrase "Tempered Radicalism".  It resonated.  I continued to explore the ideas behind it and in 2001 published the first edition of Tempered Radicals:  How Everyday Leaders Inspire Change at Work.  It was later re-puplished under the title Rocking the Boat: How Tempered Radicals Effect Change without Making Trouble.

It became very clear that there are a lot of people who feel somehow different than the environments in which they live and work.  They want to be true to themselves, but also want to fit in and succeed.  But most of all, they want to make positive change.

Change is hard.  It is messy.  But it is critical for any organization to survive, let alone thrive.  Done well, a tempered radical approach creates change that is win-win.

Tempered Radicals was first published in September, 2001, the same week as the Twin Towers in New York were attacked by terrorists.  Needless to say, "Radicals" wasn't a good title for the time.  It was re-published in 2008 as Rocking the Boat and it is that title that is still in print and available in paperback and eReader at Amazon.com.

In addition to these English language versions, Tempered Radicals has been translated into Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.
